Genre Research: Horror

We had to research a genre for this blog. I chose horror. At first I thought I knew a lot about horror. I would soon come to the realization that I was very mistaken. I chose horror for many reasons. One being because it is one of my favorite genres. Another being that it is very different in the way it it setup from most other genres. Rather than it being light outside, it is usually dark. There are 4 main lighting techniques in the horror genre. These are "uplighting", "spotlighting", "silhouettes" and "underexposure". These help create a sense of fright or gloominess throughout the scenes. There are many different camera angles used in the horror genre. These include, "birds-eye", "low angles", "close ups" and "tilted angles". Mis-En-Scene is very important in movies. Without this, there would be no movies. Most horror movies contain costumes, props and makeup such as clown makeup to tie the movies together. Sounds are also a major factor when it comes to horror movies. This is due to them a lot of times being able to scare the audience. Some popular sounds used in the genre of horror are screams, glass breaking, creaking, laughing, heavy breathing, wind and rain. These all play major parts in the movie. They all help to create the setting. some of the more famous horror movies can be put into lists. There is different types of horror. These include but are not limited to: jump scares, psychological scares, comedic horror, gruesome horror and suspenseful horror. You also have your old school classic horror films and your new school horror films. Some classic horror films are: Friday the 13th, Alien, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Chucky, The Shinning, The Exorcist, etc. Some new school horror films could be: Dont Breathe, The Boy, Annabelle, Us, Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Nun, etc.
